Burger King, Popeyes and Taco Bueno drive-throughs proposed on University Drive; hearing set to slip two weeks

Three fast-food chains could share a stretch of U.S. 380 in southeast McKinney, but residents will have to wait at least two more weeks for a public hearing on the plan.

An applicant is seeking a specific use permit for drive-through restaurants for Burger King, Popeyes and Taco Bueno on the south side of University Drive, about 280 feet west of Aviation Way, according to the agenda for Tuesday's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

The item is listed for Oct. 13, yet city planners are recommending that the commission open the hearing, continue it and table the request to its Oct. 27 meeting. The reason, according to the staff report: the signs announcing the hearing were not posted within the required timeframe.

The request has been in the works since spring. The staff report lists an original application on April 21 and revised submittals on July 28 and on Aug. 4, 13, 18 and 24.

Planning staff said they had received no letters for or against the request, and no comments had come in through the city's online citizen portal. The report notes that it does not count emails or letters sent straight to council members.

In McKinney, a drive-through restaurant needs a specific use permit, so the request goes to the planning commission for a hearing and recommendation. The report lists Planner I Emily Bell and Planning Director Lucas Raley as the contacts. A project map attached to the agenda shows the site along University Drive just west of Aviation Way.

The commission meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the meeting is streamed on the city's website.
