Construction on the rebuild of Tennessee, Lamar and Hunt streets near downtown McKinney is set to begin in November, and the city has scheduled a public meeting next week to walk residents through what the work will look like.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 401 E. Virginia St. According to the city's project page, staff will give a short presentation on the project and the estimated construction schedule, and both the project team and the contractor will be there to take questions. The city's engagement site offers online registration for the meeting.

Contract approved

The City Council approved the construction contract with DDM Construction Corp. at its Oct. 5 meeting, according to the city's meeting records. The resolution allows up to $12.95 million for the job, change orders included.

Council also approved a separate contract of up to $170,000 with TEAM Consultants Inc. to test construction materials on the project, with $136,000 coming from street funds and $34,000 from utility funds.

The city estimates the work will take more than 24 months.

Streets in the project

The project covers:

  • Tennessee Street between Virginia Street and Lamar Street
  • Lamar Street east to McDonald Street (State Highway 5)
  • Hunt Street from Kentucky Street to McDonald Street
  • Kentucky Street between Hunt Street and Lamar Street

Plans call for rebuilding the pavement completely and upgrading the water, wastewater and storm drainage lines underneath. New sidewalks built to ADA standards, street lighting, landscaping and hardscape are also part of the plan.

The city held a public input meeting on the design in August 2025.
