Alvarez’s Deciding Blow
Alex Alvarez provided the decisive blow in the ninth inning, hitting a two-run home run to center field to secure a 10-8 victory for the Houston Astros over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. The blast, measuring 424 feet, capped a high-scoring affair at Daikin Park where the Astros overcame a late rally by the visiting Rays.
Alvarez finished the day with two home runs, including an earlier two-run shot in the first inning.
Early Power and Third-Inning Surge
The game featured immediate offense from both sides. Tampa Bay opened the scoring in the top of the first when Wander Franco’s teammate, one of the Rays' regulars, homered to left-center field. However, Houston responded in the bottom of the frame with Alvarez launching a 403-foot home run to left-center, driving in Yuli Gurriel to take a 2-1 lead.
The Rays regained the lead in the second inning when Jose Siri homered to right-center, scoring one runner to make it 3-2. Houston tied the game and then pulled ahead in the third. After a sacrifice fly by one of their key hitters scored a run, the Astros added two more in dramatic fashion.
One runner singled to right, scoring another, before stealing second. That same runner then stole home to extend the lead to 6-2. The scoring sequence in the third was chaotic, with multiple runners advancing on hits and steals.
Rays Rally in the Seventh
Houston maintained its advantage through the middle innings, with the lead holding at 7-2 after a Rays error in the fourth allowed one run to score. The Rays then cut the deficit in the fourth when one of their batters homered to right-center, scoring two runs. The score stood at 7-4 before Alvarez singled in the fifth to bring one home, making it 7-5.
