Muncy Delivers Deciding Blow
Tyler Muncy’s solo home run to center field in the seventh inning proved the difference as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Houston Astros 7-6 on Sunday at Daikin Park. The 409-foot shot gave the visitors a 7-6 lead that they would preserve through the final out. The Athletics finished the game with a 51-80 record, while the host Astros fell to 65-66.
Attendance at the venue was 30,708.
Astros Build Early Lead
Houston took control early in the game. In the first inning, Jose Altuve homered to left center, driving in Alvarez for a 0-3 deficit. The Astros extended their lead to 0-4 in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, Altuve and Paredes combined for additional damage, pushing the score to 0-6. Houston's pitcher Cristian Javier threw four innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out eight batters.
Athletics Rally in the Fifth
The momentum shifted dramatically in the fifth inning. Serven launched a three-run home run to left center, cutting the deficit to 3-6. Butler followed with a double that scored Bolte, and White singled to right field to score Gelof and Butler, tying the game at 6-6.
Jack Perkins earned the win with five innings of work, allowing three hits and one earned run while walking five and striking out six. Scott Blewett and Luis Medina provided scoreless relief, and Hogan Harris recorded the save.
Final Pitching Notes
The Athletics' Brady Basso started but allowed four hits and three earned runs in one inning. For Houston, Enyel De Los Santos surrendered three hits and three earned runs in one-third of an inning. Kai-Wei Teng pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out four.
Steven Okert took the loss after allowing one hit and one earned run. AJ Blubaugh and Josh Hader finished the game for the Astros, with Hader striking out two batters without allowing a hit.
