Decisive Moment in the Ninth
Jake Nimmo provided the winning run with a single to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning. The hit scored Wyatt Langford and left Josh Jung in scoring position, giving the Texas Rangers a 6-5 lead that held until the final out. The victory improved the Rangers’ record to 49-47, while the Houston Astros fell to 47-51.
Early Astros Lead
The Houston Astros, batting first, established an early advantage. In the second inning, Jose Altuve started the scoring with a single to right field that brought Adolis Garcia home, making it 1-0. Two batters later, Corey Seager doubled to right, driving in two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Rangers responded in the fourth inning when Marcus Semien homered to left-center field, narrowing the deficit to 3-1.
The Rangers took the lead in the fifth inning. Nathaniel Lowe tripled to right, scoring Seager to make it 4-3 in favor of Houston. However, the Rangers tied the game in the seventh inning.
Josh Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Seager to tie the score at 4-4. Immediately after, Adolis Garcia singled to center, scoring two runs and giving Texas a 6-4 advantage.
Late Home Runs and Relief
The Astros mounted a comeback in the eighth inning. Jose Altuve homered to left field, cutting the deficit to 6-5. He was followed by Yordan Alvarez, who also homered to left, tying the game at 5-5. This marked the third home run of the game for Houston, tying the score and setting up a tense ninth inning.
Pitching Performance
Josh Hader took the loss for the Astros, pitching scoreless relief but allowing three hits in his brief appearance. Cristian Javier started for Houston, pitching three innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Enyel De Los Santos, Bryan Abreu, and Steven Okert also pitched for Houston without allowing additional runs.
For the Rangers, Jacob Latz earned the win, pitching one hitless inning with no earned runs. MacKenzie Gore started for Texas, throwing four innings and allowing one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Alexander and Cole Winn provided relief, with Winn recording his eighth hold.
Robby Ahlstrom and Peyton Gray pitched in relief, with Ahlstrom taking the blown save and Gray recording the blown save.
The game was played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, with an attendance of 33,804. The Rangers’ win came on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
