Decisive Offensive Surge
James Wood provided the decisive blow in a high-scoring affair at Nationals Park, launching a four-run home run in the fifth inning to help the Washington Nationals secure a 12-11 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday. The win improved the Nationals' record to 47-45, while the Astros fell to 45-48.
The game featured six home runs and constant momentum shifts. Houston took an early lead in the first inning when Walker doubled to center field, allowing Paredes to score. Washington responded immediately as Mead doubled to center, scoring Wood to tie the game at 1-1.
The Astros regained control in the second inning when Altuve homered to left field, a 372-foot shot that also drove in Shewmake and Matthews to make it 4-1. Washington answered in the third inning with two runs on Diaz's home run to left, a 389-foot blast that scored Smith. The Nationals continued to chip away in the same frame.
García Jr. doubled to left to score Nuñez, and Mead followed with a single to left that scored Wood, bringing the score to 6-3.
Washington tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the third when Abrams homered to right field, a 392-foot shot that also scored García Jr. and Mead. The lead changed hands again in the fifth inning. Houston took the lead when Mead homered to left center, a 404-foot shot, and Millas hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Abrams, making it 8-6.
However, Wood turned the tide with his grand slam to center field, a 446-foot home run that also scored Crews, Young, and Nuñez, giving Washington a 12-8 advantage.
