The Washington Nationals delivered a decisive offensive performance on Wednesday, July 8, at Nationals Park, defeating the Houston Astros 8-2. The victory was anchored by power hitting from two of Washington’s key contributors, as CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr. each recorded their 20th home runs of the season. The Nationals improved their record to 48-46, while the Astros fell to 46-49.
Scoring Breakdown
Washington established early control in the third inning. In the top of the frame, Abrams hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Wood to score, giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Lile doubled to left field, bringing Garcia Jr. home to extend the advantage to 2-0.
The game’s momentum shifted dramatically in the fourth inning when Garcia Jr. launched a 417-foot home run to right-center field. The blast drove in both Ruiz and Wood, instantly widening the margin to 5-0. Houston managed to get on the board in the fifth inning when Diaz scored on a single by Matthews, making it 5-1.
However, the Nationals responded immediately. Abrams followed with a 415-foot home run to right-center field, increasing the lead to 6-1. The inning continued with additional runs, as Lile scored on a groundout by Tena, and Crews scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruiz, pushing the score to 8-1.
Pitching and Defense
Washington starter Foster Griffin was the workhorse for the Nationals, pitching seven innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out nine batters. His performance earned him the win, improving his record to 10-2. Griffin was supported by Orlando Ribalta, who pitched a perfect inning, and Justin Lawrence, who closed out the game with a scoreless frame.
