The McKinney City Council is scheduled to consider an expansion request from the McKinney Islamic Association on Aug. 4, 2026, with the meeting set for 6 p.m.
The association wants to develop a campus on Virginia Parkway near its existing mosque. The current proposal calls for three separate buildings, a worship space, an education building and a gym, rather than the single larger structure the group previously pursued.
City records cited in the report show 67 pages of resident emails, with many opposing the plan. Objections included concerns about vehicle traffic, public safety and whether the project fits nearby neighborhoods. Some residents also wrote that they opposed the proposal because the facility would be Muslim.
The association has been operating at its current mosque since 2014, and it was established in 1997. Past leadership said the congregation has grown, and the planned space is meant to serve hundreds of worshippers.
A previous effort in 2024 sought rezoning for more than five acres to allow a larger mosque facility. That plan encountered public opposition, was denied, and the request was withdrawn. McKinney resident Mousa Abu Daabes, who helped lay the groundwork for the association, supported expansion at a 2024 planning and zoning meeting and said he remembered only five Muslim families in McKinney in the 1990s.
