A new public art display has opened at the McKinney Cotton Mill Arts and Design District, marking the first exhibition held in the newly established Atrium Gallery. The show, titled America 250: Texas Trailblazing Wonder Women Exhibition, runs through August 26 and is presented by MillHouse Foundation in collaboration with Cotton Mill Partners. The event coincides with the celebration of America’s Semiquincentennial.
The collection consists of 24 original, large-scale pieces, each measuring 48 by 60 inches. Created by artists from across the state, the works pay tribute to women who have significantly impacted history. The subjects include Barbara Jordan, Lady Bird Johnson, Ann Richards, Simone Biles, Beyoncé, Mary Kay Ash, Bessie Coleman, Esther Dyson, Marta Sophia, Ima Hogg, Wanda Harper Black, and Selena Quintanilla.
Dana Brock, the Atrium Gallery Director, described the show as an exploration of symbolism, portraiture, and storytelling. She noted that each piece captures the spirit of a woman who changed the course of history, creating a visually striking and meaningful experience for viewers. All works in the exhibition are available for purchase, allowing collectors to acquire museum-scale originals while supporting Texas-based artists.
A reception was held on June 27 to introduce the participating artists to the public. During this event, award recipients were announced, including the recipient of the $5,000 Texas Trailblazer Award and five individuals receiving $500 Lone Star Awards.
The gallery is located at 610 Elm Street in McKinney, specifically in Parking Lot B near the MillHouse Foundation and White Box Roastery. Admission is free, with hours running from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekends.
