A recent study from Southern Methodist University (SMU) indicates that the adoption of autonomous vehicles in the Dallas-Fort Worth area could lead to a significant decrease in traffic congestion by 2045. This research is particularly relevant for McKinney, located about 31 miles north of Dallas.
Led by civil and environmental professor Khaled Abdelghany, the study utilized a travel model from the North Central Texas Council of Governments. It evaluated the effects of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) on traffic flow, testing scenarios with 25%, 50%, and 100% driverless vehicles on major routes like U.S. 75 and Interstate 635.
Abdelghany explained that traffic congestion is affected by high demand, speed variability, and stop-and-go driving, which can impede flow efficiency. He proposed that autonomous vehicles could mitigate these issues through improved driving patterns.
The study's findings, published in the Journal of Urban Technology, suggest that if all vehicles were driverless, traffic delays could drop by 33% by 2045, and daily vehicle-hours traveled could decrease by at least 19% as commuters move further from their workplaces without the need to drive.
The research team included Abdelghany, Behruz Paschai from the Texas Transportation Institute, and Abby Morgan from Kittelson & Associates, Inc. While the study highlights potential benefits, it also acknowledges ongoing concerns regarding the initial challenges of implementing this technology.
