Commercial passenger flights have officially commenced at McKinney National Airport, ending a long period in which the facility served exclusively as a general aviation hub. Avelo Airlines launched its inaugural nonstop service, establishing itself as the first commercial carrier to operate from the location.
This development marks a significant operational shift for the airport, which has historically supported private and charter aircraft rather than scheduled airline traffic.
The initial schedule features five nonstop routes connecting McKinney to popular vacation spots. Travelers can now fly directly to Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Tampa. These destinations were selected to provide North Texas residents with easier access to leisure markets while also facilitating inbound tourism to Collin County.
The service offers an alternative to driving to major regional hubs such as Dallas Fort Worth International Airport or Dallas Love Field.
The arrival of commercial flights follows extensive planning and investment by local officials and the airline. Earlier this year, Avelo announced its intention to establish its first North Texas operating base at McKinney National Airport.
The launch was preceded by community engagement efforts, including a Display Day event that allowed residents to view aircraft and learn about the airport’s future plans before the first passenger flights departed.
