A group seeking to remove four McKinney officials from office has formally submitted its petition signatures to the city. This action moves the effort into the verification stage, where the city will determine if the required number of valid signatures has been met.
The recall campaign targets Mayor Bill Cox, At Large 1 Council Member Ernest Lynch, District 3 Council Member Geré Feltus, and District 1 Council Member Justin Beller. John Aselton, the designee for the petitioners’ committee, stated that the group collected more than 7,000 signatures.
Organizers reported that they internally validated at least 6,500 of these, a figure that exceeds the 5,805 signatures required for the effort to advance.
Aselton told The Dallas Express that the petition sheets were turned in on Friday. "We just submitted all of our petition sheets to the city. They’re going through and documenting them," Aselton said. "We’re going to get copies as well as documented receipt for intake." He also expressed gratitude to the volunteers and citizens who participated in the signature drive.
The campaign stated that it surpassed the signature threshold before the September 26 deadline and continued collecting signatures thereafter. According to the campaign’s published process, the submission does not immediately certify the signatures. The McKinney city secretary must review the petitions to determine how many qualify under the city charter and applicable election rules.
