Two men are facing criminal charges after investigators said a July street racing incident involving a BMW and a Tesla ended in a crash that killed a 77-year-old couple in an SUV.
James Armont, 51, was driving a 2021 BMW, and Braydon Moss, 22, was driving the Tesla, according to details from an arrest affidavit cited in the report. Armont has been charged with two counts of manslaughter. Moss has been charged with racing causing death.
Dash camera video recorded events before the collision, according to the report. Investigators said Armont’s BMW reached 112 mph in an area with a 50 mph speed limit before it hit the SUV. The Tesla nearly struck the same SUV shortly before the BMW collision, according to the report.
Both people inside the SUV died. Armont was also seriously injured, and a witness who helped remove him from the wreckage said his injuries included a facial fracture, injuries to his liver and spleen, and a compound fracture to his leg.
A witness said there was no braking or skidding before the impact. Investigators also said street racing had been an ongoing issue in that area, though further location details were not provided in the source.
