Jennifer Smith, a property owner in McKinney, reported a substantial rise in rental revenue during the recent FIFA World Cup. Her downtown historic cottages hosted international visitors seeking a traditional Texas experience, leading to a 78 percent increase in net income for June compared to the previous year.
Smith noted that the tournament provided more than just financial gain. She highlighted interactions with guests from Japan, who appreciated the opportunity to relax on a front porch swing and gather around an outdoor fire pit. Smith provided these visitors with a gift basket containing local products, and the guests later sent a message expressing their gratitude for the experience.
The surge in bookings aligns with broader trends observed by Airbnb in North Texas. Following France’s advancement to the semifinal match against Spain, search volume for accommodations in the region increased by nearly 300 percent. Smith described the outcome as exceeding her initial expectations, which had anticipated only a modest bonus rather than a significant business boost.
To manage the increased volume, Smith relied on Airbnb’s automated pricing tools. She stated that allowing the platform to handle rate adjustments worked effectively, simplifying the management of her properties during the high-demand period. She found the process easier than anticipated, noting that the built-in features reduced the administrative burden.
While Smith does not anticipate a similar influx of visitors in the immediate future, she expects North Texas to continue attracting guests through other major events. She emphasized that the personal connections formed with travelers and the ability to share local hospitality were the most rewarding aspects of hosting during the tournament.
