McKinney residential utility rates to rise effective Oct. 1, 2026

The City of McKinney announced that residential utility rates will increase beginning October 1, 2026. The city stated that these adjustments are intended to help maintain reliable, safe, and sustainable services while reflecting regional growth and infrastructure needs. Additionally, the changes in water and sewer rates account for increased treatment costs from the North Texas Municipal Water District, which serves as McKinney’s water supplier.

Under the new rate structure, the base water rate will rise from $19.80 to $21.60, an approximate increase of 9 percent. The base sewer rate will increase from $28.10 to $31.20, representing an 11 percent rise. The monthly rate for trash and recycling collection will go up from $20.36 to $20.99, a 3 percent increase.

The monthly drainage fee will increase from $5.25 to $5.50, or 5 percent.

Water charges consist of a base rate and consumption fees billed in 1,000-gallon increments. For residents inside city limits, the base rate is currently $19.80. Consumption rates vary by tier, starting at $5.00 per 1,000 gallons for usage between 1 and 7,000 gallons. Outside city limits, the base rate is $24.75, with the first consumption tier at $6.25 per 1,000 gallons.

Sewer charges also include a base rate and consumption fees. Inside city limits, the base rate is $28.10, and the unit cost is $7.80 per 1,000 gallons, capped at a maximum of 8,000 gallons. Outside city limits, the base rate is $35.15, with a unit cost of $9.75 per 1,000 gallons.

Sewer billing is determined by a Winter Quarter Average calculation based on water consumption from December through February.

Trash and recycling services are provided by Frontier Waste Solutions. The standard monthly rate includes one trash container and one recycling container. Additional trash containers cost $7.82 each per month, while additional recycling containers cost $3.50 each per month. The drainage fee is used to maintain the city’s drainage system, prevent flooding, and reduce standing water in creeks and culverts.
