Baylor University’s football team is facing a challenge as wide receiver Taz Williams Jr. has sustained a broken collarbone during fall camp. Head coach Dave Aranda confirmed that Williams will undergo surgery and is expected to return in a few weeks. However, his absence will require other players in the wide receiver rotation to increase their contributions as the season approaches.
Among those expected to step up is Ashton Jones, a six-foot-four redshirt freshman. While he brings a different physical style compared to Williams, Jones possesses a significant vertical threat, making him a potential asset for the team. With Williams sidelined, wide receivers coach Dallas Baker will have the opportunity to evaluate Jones's capabilities in stretching the defense and securing a position in the rotation.
Another candidate to fill the gap is Jadon Porter, who has familiarity with the offense. Last season, Porter recorded nine receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, demonstrating his effectiveness as a slot receiver. With his experience from participating in 11 games last year, Porter is likely to play a crucial role in maintaining the passing game during Williams's recovery.
Additionally, true freshman London Smith is being given a chance to prove himself as a viable option. Smith, known for his impressive athleticism and speed, could become a significant playmaker for the team. However, the coaching staff acknowledges the risks associated with relying on a freshman, including the potential for mistakes as he adjusts to the collegiate level.
Allowing Smith to participate in practice will help accelerate his development and assess his readiness for the upcoming season.
