The Dallas Cowboys will be without running back Malik Davis for their season opener against the New York Giants after he injured his hip during Friday’s practice. Davis was removed from the field by cart and later ruled out for Sunday’s game.

Davis had been competing for a larger role in Dallas’ backfield after producing during the preseason. He recorded 68 rushing yards on 12 carries, an average of 5.7 yards per attempt, and added a receiving touchdown. The team now has fewer backfield options behind its expected starter.

ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Davis would not play against New York and that he was undergoing additional evaluation to determine the injury’s severity. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler later reported that the Cowboys were preparing for Davis to be unavailable for an extended period. Fowler quoted a source who said, “It’s bad.”

Javonte Williams is expected to lead Dallas’ running backs. During the 2025 season, Williams gained 1,201 yards and scored 11 touchdowns on 252 carries in 16 starts. He also made 35 catches for 137 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Emari Demercado could receive more work behind Williams. Dallas claimed him off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 1. Demercado spent his first three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he totaled 819 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 126 carries, along with 50 receptions for 324 yards and one receiving touchdown.

Hunter Luepke and Israel Abanikanda are additional options. Luepke has primarily played fullback for Dallas but has also taken snaps at running back and other offensive positions. Abanikanda is on the Cowboys’ practice squad after previously playing for the New York Jets. Further details about Davis’ injury were not provided.
