DJ Lagway will not play in Baylor’s Week 2 matchup with Prairie View A&M after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the Bears’ season-opening loss to Auburn. Nate Bennett is scheduled to make his first career start at quarterback.
Lagway completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Baylor’s 17-16 defeat. He finished the game despite the injury.
Baylor scored a touchdown in the final seconds and then tried to win with a two-point conversion instead of sending the game to overtime. The attempt was unsuccessful. The source said coach Dave Aranda has not indicated whether Lagway’s health affected that decision.
Aranda had described Lagway as day to day earlier in the week, while a later report said the quarterback had been trying to play through the injury. He was considered doubtful before being ruled out.
The source said the timing could prevent Lagway from using the Prairie View A&M game to regain consistency after the opener, although the source did not provide a timetable for his return.
