The Dallas Cowboys have made significant roster decisions, particularly at the running back position, where coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, both drafted in 2025, have been released from the team.

The Cowboys have opted to retain running backs Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. On the same day, the team claimed Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, citing his special teams capabilities and his previous connection with offensive coordinator Klayton Adams as key factors in the decision.

Schottenheimer noted the competitive nature of the roster, emphasizing Malik Davis's consistent performance as a reason for the team's decision to move forward without Blue and Mafah. He mentioned that both players were informed of the uncertainty regarding their potential return to the practice squad, stating, "Not sure that it would go that direction. And that's as honest as I could be with them."

The Cowboys have signed 13 players to their practice squad, which can accommodate up to 16 players. The inclusion of running back Israel Abanikanda has further complicated the situation for Blue and Mafah, as the team looks to build a competitive running back room.

Schottenheimer expressed confidence in the current running backs, stating, "I feel really good about Javonte. I raved about Malik. Hunter Luepke's a guy that doesn't get talked enough about." He also acknowledged the depth of talent available in the league, which contributes to the difficult decisions made during roster cuts.

Further details regarding the potential return of Blue and Mafah to the practice squad remain unclear at this time.
