The Dallas Cowboys have made significant changes to their running back lineup, releasing Jaydon Blue over the weekend. Blue, a former University of Texas player, was previously seen as a promising complementary back but spent much of his rookie season struggling with maturity issues and was not expected to return to the Cowboys' practice squad.

In a twist, Blue was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas' rivals, to join their practice squad. The Eagles are likely to benefit from Blue's speed, as he recorded a 4.38-second time in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. However, the Cowboys hope he does not reach his potential while playing for Philadelphia, where he will compete alongside star running back Saquon Barkley.

In response to Blue's departure, the Cowboys have added Emari Demercado, a former standout with the Arizona Cardinals. Demercado, who stands 5-11 and weighs 215 pounds, brings experience and versatility to the Cowboys' backfield. He averaged an impressive 6.5 yards per carry during his time in Arizona and is expected to contribute on special teams and in pass protection.

Demercado's previous offensive coordinator, Klayton Adams, was with the Cardinals during Demercado's first two NFL seasons, providing the Cowboys with insight into his capabilities. In his three seasons with Arizona, Demercado rushed for 819 yards and three touchdowns on 126 attempts.

The Cowboys' running back room now includes Malik Davis as the second-string back and Hunter Luepke as a fullback. Additionally, Israel Abanikanda has been reinstated to the practice squad. The situation surrounding second-year back Phil Mafah remains unclear, as he was also not retained.

The Cowboys' decision to release Blue and acquire Demercado highlights the dynamic nature of NFL rosters, where one team's discarded player can become another's asset.
