Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis has been penalized with a fine of $6,735 for unnecessary roughness during a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. This infraction, which involved illegal helmet use, occurred in the first quarter of the Week 2 matchup at the 12:07 mark, although he was not penalized during the game itself.
The NFL announced the fine recently, as it typically reveals all preseason penalties after the exhibition games conclude. Davis was the only player from the Cowboys to receive a fine during the preseason. In comparison, the largest fine issued in the league went to Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Tytus Howard, who was fined $12,537 for a similar infraction in Week 1.
Davis is currently in the second year of a two-year, $2.1 million contract, with a base salary of $1.1 million for the 2026 season. The fine represents approximately 0.6% of his salary. The NFL states that all fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation, which supports athletes in need and promotes health and safety initiatives across all levels of football.
In terms of his role on the team, Davis has secured the backup running back position behind Javonte Williams after a competitive offseason. The Cowboys had been evaluating Davis against teammates Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah for the RB2 spot. Despite expectations that Blue might earn a roster spot, he was cut along with Mafah, while Davis remained on the team.
Davis's performance in the preseason game against the Cardinals helped solidify his position, especially after a quiet offseason. Following the initial roster cuts, the Cowboys added Emari Demercado, who will provide additional depth and special teams support. Blue has since joined the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles, while Mafah remains a free agent.
