The Dallas Cowboys have waived quarterback Joe Milton as part of their roster adjustments. Milton joined the team in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots that involved a fifth-round draft pick for 2025.
Milton had been competing for the backup quarterback position against Sam Howell throughout the offseason. Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which necessitated Milton's release to make room on the 53-man roster.
During the 2026 preseason, Milton played in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions. He also contributed with 12 carries for 14 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as capable backup options. He recounted a conversation with Milton where the quarterback expressed self-assurance despite the competition. Schottenheimer noted the complexity of the Cowboys' offensive system, which can be challenging for new players to learn.
Milton himself stated that he felt more comfortable with the Cowboys' offense after a year of experience and a full training camp. He emphasized the importance of understanding the playbook and being able to execute the offense effectively. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, he maintained focus on his performance and what he could control.
