Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver at TCU, spent three days in the hospital due to a brain bleed and other injuries stemming from an alleged attack by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
Reportedly unhappy with Ezukanma's practice performance, Fields allegedly struck him in the head while he was seated and looking at his phone. Witnesses indicated that after the punch, Fields kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, resulting in him losing consciousness. Ezukanma later recounted to police that he could only recall being in the training room and inquiring with teammates about what had occurred.
Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization. Scans revealed a brain bleed, which necessitated his transfer to the ICU. He underwent several CT scans, with one indicating that the hematoma had increased in size. He was released from the hospital on August 16, having also sustained a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and subsequently turned himself in to law enforcement, facing charges of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released from Tarrant County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond. Following the incident, Fields conveyed remorse in a text message to TCU police, acknowledging his emotional reaction and offering to pay for Ezukanma's medical expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked on the situation, indicating it was uncharacteristic for both Fields and the team. Ezukanma, a graduate of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver for the upcoming season, with TCU's next game set against Grambling on September 12.
