The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints have each been fined $500,000 following a brawl during their joint training camp practice. The NFL announced the penalties, emphasizing that sportsmanship has been a priority in recent years, particularly during joint practices. Teams were reminded of their responsibilities to prevent unsportsmanlike conduct that could lead to injuries.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged the severity of the fines but indicated he plans to appeal the decision. He described the fine as 'pretty stiff' and recognized that the violent actions during the practice do not reflect the image the league or the team wishes to portray. Jones stated, 'Taking the helmets off, swinging and hitting, that type of thing is not good for anybody.'
If the appeal is unsuccessful, Jones mentioned he intends to impose additional fines on the players involved in the altercation. Notably, linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku was involved in a physical confrontation, ripping the helmet off Saints offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga and throwing a punch at offensive lineman Erik McCoy.
Saints rookie wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner also played a significant role in the brawl, initially clashing with Cowboys cornerback Caelan Carson before executing a wrestling move on Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson.
