Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is set to undergo surgery for a fractured forearm, which will keep him out for an estimated several weeks. The injury occurred during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints when Liufau was making a tackle in the first quarter. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the surgery is scheduled for as early as Monday.
Liufau, who was drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft from Notre Dame, has participated in all 34 games for the Cowboys over the past two seasons. Heading into his third year, he transitioned from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under the guidance of defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
Liufau expressed gratitude for the support he received from coaches and teammates during this adjustment.
Last season, Liufau's role on special teams expanded significantly, increasing his participation from 35% of snaps in his rookie year to 75%, totaling 361 snaps. His defensive snaps, however, decreased from 521 in 2024 to 202 in 2025. Liufau acknowledged the importance of special teams in securing a roster spot, emphasizing the need for effort and dedication.
Schottenheimer remarked on the impact of losing Liufau, describing him as a vital contributor to all four special teams units. He noted Liufau's commitment to his rehabilitation and the team's next steps in light of his injury.
