WACO, Texas — DJ Lagway is starting anew at Baylor University after facing significant challenges during his time at the University of Florida. Following a disappointing season marked by a five-interception game against LSU and a series of injuries, Lagway's mental health took a toll, prompting his mother, Nikita, to visit him in Gainesville, where she found him feeling broken and despondent.
After transferring to Baylor, Lagway is experiencing a fresh perspective on life and football. He is closer to home, with his father having played for Baylor, and he has a familiar connection with head coach Dave Aranda, who previously recruited him.
Within weeks of joining the team, Aranda recognized Lagway's struggles and encouraged him to express his feelings openly, leading to a breakthrough moment where Lagway vented his frustrations about the past year.
This emotional release has allowed Lagway to become more communicative with his teammates and coaches. He feels a sense of freedom and relief in his new environment, contrasting the pressure he faced in Florida. Lagway described his life in Waco as slower and more manageable, which he appreciates.
As the Bears prepare to open their season against Auburn in Atlanta, questions remain about which version of Lagway will take the field. He was a highly touted recruit, recognized as the top quarterback in the 2024 class, but his time at Florida was marred by inconsistent performance, including 23 interceptions and a 4-8 record as a starter.
