The SMU Mustangs are looking to bolster their wide receiver group with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This comes in the wake of the team losing their top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who together contributed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to connect with key offensive players. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has stepped in and praised Smith's size and contested catch ability, while also highlighting Hale's speed and agility.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, is making a comeback after a severe knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season, but he has shown promise at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as valuable assets for the team. Smith, with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style. Senior Yamir Knight and sophomore Jalen Cooper are also expected to play significant roles as the Mustangs prepare for their season opener against Florida State on September 7.
The competitive environment created by Hale and Smith is already enhancing the team's overall performance, according to cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward.
