Sam Erger, the head volleyball coach at Southern Methodist University, was suspended for two games due to a communication violation, as stated by a university representative. This self-imposed suspension by SMU Athletics occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured victories against Colorado State and UC Davis. In the match against Colorado State, the team won in four sets, with sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis achieving a notable first double-double, recording 22 kills and 14 digs. The Mustangs also triumphed over UC Davis in five sets.
Erger returned to coach the team on September 2 for a match against TCU, which ended in a five-set loss. In that game, Davis led the team again with 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija made a strong debut with 13 kills.
Since taking over the SMU volleyball program in February 2022, Erger has guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. Last season, the Mustangs tied the program record with 27 wins. The team is scheduled to play against the University of San Diego next, with the match available for streaming on ESPN+.
