Tank Dell’s updated contract with the Houston Texans includes incentives that could allow him to recover money while he works back from a serious knee injury. The agreement was reached last week before Houston’s season opener against the Buffalo Bills.
Under the revised terms, Dell could earn as much as $3.645 million if he is active for the final 13 games and plays at least half of the Texans’ offensive snaps. The deal also includes other incentive levels, according to details posted by Over The Cap’s Troy Chapman on Sept. 11.
KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson reported that Dell can add $1.5 million to $1.704 million already included in the contract. The existing amount consists of a $1.145 million salary and a $500,000 signing bonus. Dell would receive $300,000 for reaching a 30% offensive snap share, with another $300,000 available for each additional 5% increase through 50%.
He can also receive $38,461 for every game in which he is active on the roster.
Dell is on injured reserve with a designation that allows him to return, but he will miss at least the first four games while rehabbing the knee injury he suffered in 2024. The injury included a dislocated knee, a torn ACL, and damage to the MCL and LCL.
Wilson reported that Dell has made overall progress but is still working toward regaining his top speed after limited training-camp practice work.
The earliest possible return would come against the Dallas Cowboys, although Dell could need more time as he takes part in 11-on-11 drills. After Houston opens his practice window, the team will have 21 days to activate him.
