The Houston Texans have announced that they will not continue contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the regular season begins. General manager Nick Caserio stated that if an agreement is not finalized by the team's season opener against the Buffalo Bills on September 13, all discussions will be postponed until the next offseason.
Stroud, who is 24 years old, has already had his fifth-year option picked up, securing his position with the team through 2027. Caserio had previously indicated in late July that there was potential for an extension, but no deal appears to be forthcoming at this time.
Since being selected as the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, Stroud has led the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his first three seasons. He holds a career record of 28-18 and was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023.
In the 2025 season, Stroud achieved a career-high completion rate of 64%, helping the Texans to a 12-5 record and a divisional playoff berth.
