The Dallas Cowboys faced the challenging task of trimming their roster to 53 players ahead of the NFL deadline this past weekend. Among the notable cuts were second-year running back Jaydon Blue and former second-round pick Sam Williams. In a surprising move, the Cowboys waived quarterback Joe Milton III after his strong preseason performance to make room for newly claimed running back Emari Demercado.
Despite the cuts, the Cowboys retained several players by signing them to their practice squad, which now includes offensive tackle Wanya Morris and a mix of other players such as running back Israel Abanikanda and wide receivers Jordan Hudson and Anthony Smith. Hudson, in particular, stood out during the preseason with impressive catches, while defensive tackle Tommy Dunn showed effectiveness as a run defender.
The practice squad also features converted safety Justin Barron, who excelled in coverage, and Curtis Robinson, noted for his special teams contributions. Defensive back Reddy Steward, who had a solid performance in 2025, is another player who could see action as the season progresses.
Several players who were cut did not return to the Cowboys. Julius Wood was claimed by the Miami Dolphins after a strong preseason, while guard Trevor Keegan joined the Minnesota Vikings. Sam Williams, who had previously recorded 8.5 sacks in his first two seasons, signed with the Cleveland Browns following his recovery from ACL surgery.
