This sales tax holiday will take place from August 7 through August 9, 2026. During this period, many items will be exempt from both state and local sales tax, which can amount to a total of 8.25 percent.
Eligible items include most clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item, as well as student backpacks, with a limit of 10 per purchase. Additionally, a specific list of school supplies under $100 each will qualify for the exemption. The tax exemption applies to purchases made in Texas stores and online from sellers operating in Texas.
However, certain items, such as jewelry, handbags, watches, and clothing designed mainly for athletic use, do not qualify. Shoppers will not need a coupon or exemption certificate, as the discount will be applied automatically at checkout on qualifying items.
