McKinney utility customers will see higher charges on their next bills. A new rate schedule for water, wastewater, trash and drainage took effect Oct. 1 with the start of the city's 2026-27 fiscal year, and the city flagged the change on its website this week.
The city's fee and rate change list for the new budget year called for a 9% increase in water rates, both inside and outside the city limits, and an 11% increase in wastewater rates.
What residents now pay
Under the residential schedule posted by the city's water billing office, the monthly base charge for water inside the city limits is $21.60. Water use is billed per 1,000 gallons on tiers:
- 1 to 7,000 gallons: $5.45
- 7,001 to 20,000 gallons: $7.50
- 20,001 to 40,000 gallons: $9.50
- More than 40,000 gallons: $11.40
Sewer carries a $31.20 monthly base charge plus $8.65 per 1,000 gallons inside the city, capped at 8,000 gallons. McKinney bills sewer on a winter quarter average, using December through February water use to set the most a household can be charged for sewer starting each April. New accounts are billed on actual water use until that average is set.
Customers outside the city limits pay more: a $27 water base charge, $6.80 to $14.25 per 1,000 gallons depending on the tier, and a $39 sewer base charge with $10.80 per 1,000 gallons.
The monthly residential trash and recycling charge, which covers one gray trash cart and one blue recycling cart collected weekly by Frontier Waste Solutions, rose from $20.36 to $20.99 plus tax, about 3%. Extra trash carts are $8.06 a month and extra recycling carts $3.61.
