Downtown McKinney's Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library is due to reopen Saturday, Dec. 5, after a renovation that puts a planetarium inside the building, Local Profile reported Monday.

The library will mark the reopening with a celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day, with family activities and showings of "The Night Sky" in the new planetarium throughout the event.

What's new inside

The centerpiece is a 26-foot, full-dome planetarium meant for astronomy programs and other immersive shows. The renovation also adds:

  • dedicated spaces for children and for teens
  • roughly 2,500 square feet set aside for hands-on exhibits
  • updated technology
  • a room for local history materials

Local Profile put the city's investment in the project at about $20 million.

Where programs are now

While the downtown building has been under construction, the McKinney Public Library System's fall programs, from toddler story times to a Halloween Haunt for all ages on Saturday, Oct. 31, have been listed on the city's calendar at the library's 6861 W. Eldorado Parkway location.

More information on the reopening is available through the McKinney Public Library System.
