Ten McKinney arts groups, from a community band to a youth ballet company, are in line for $175,000 in season support grants this year under recommendations from the McKinney Arts Commission that go to the City Council on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The resolution sets $350,000 in all for arts funding in the 2026-27 budget year. Besides the season grants, it reserves $85,000 for project and outreach grants, $80,000 for public art and $10,000 for public outreach, according to the staff summary from the city's Cultural District, which oversees the commission.

Who would get what

The commission recommended full funding for eight of the ten groups that applied for season support:

  • McKinney Community Band: $20,000
  • McKinney Philharmonic Orchestra: $20,000
  • McKinney Repertory Theatre: $20,000
  • MillHouse McKinney: $20,000
  • Texas Youth Ballet: $20,000
  • The Greater North Texas Youth Orchestra: $20,000
  • Arts and Music Guild: $17,900
  • McKinney Community Concert Association: $10,000

Two applicants would get less than they asked for. The Art Club of McKinney sought $20,000 and is recommended for $17,100. Choral Community of North Texas, Sostenuto, also asked for $20,000 and is recommended for $10,000. The staff summary does not explain the reductions.

Altogether, the ten groups requested $187,900, which is $12,900 more than the season pool the commission recommended.

The other pots

The $85,000 for project and outreach grants is a separate program for single arts projects. The public art and public outreach amounts are listed in the resolution without a breakdown of specific projects.

Staff recommends that the council approve the resolution confirming the amounts. Contacts listed on the item are Cultural District Director Andrew Jones and Jakia Brunell, marketing and development specialist for the McKinney Performing Arts Center.

The regular council meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday and will be streamed on the city's website.
