The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is running two Halloween nights back to back this week, one for adults on Friday and its family trick-or-treat event on Saturday, and both have limited tickets that will not be sold at the gate once they run out.

The museum, a 289-acre nature preserve and museum at 1 Nature Place in McKinney, will close to regular visitors at 3 p.m. both days to set up, and reopen at 6 p.m. for the ticketed events, according to its event pages.

Friday: Fright at the Museum, 21 and older

Fright at the Museum runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, and no one under 21 will be admitted. Tickets are $39 a person, with $5 off for Heard members, and include two drinks from a selection of Tupps beer, wine, soda or water. Members also need the special event ticket.

The evening includes a mini trick-or-treat trail along the museum's Dinosaurs Live! exhibit, an outdoor movie in the amphitheater, a haunted forest that opens after the movie, a fortune-telling cottage and a costume contest. Food will be sold on site.

Saturday: Halloween at the Heard

The family event, Halloween at the Heard, is from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Families trick-or-treat along the Dinosaurs Live! trail of animatronic dinosaurs, and the museum plans to show "How to Train Your Dragon" in the amphitheater after trick-or-treating. The Heard says the event sells out every year.

Tickets are $16 for adults and $12 for children ages 3 to 12, and children 2 and under get in free. Heard members save $5 a ticket. The event page also lists a seniors' rate for ages 60 and up but does not show the price.

Costume contests

Both nights have a costume contest that supports the care of the sanctuary's animals. Entrants can buy a $5 contest ticket online with their event ticket or bring an item from the museum's animal care wish list, such as paper towels, new or gently used linens and towels, clean newspaper or Dawn dish soap, to the check-in table.

Both events are presented by Plano Tree Care. Tickets are nonrefundable, and guests should bring a printed or digital copy, the museum says.
