Planning for McKinney's Veterans Day ceremony continues Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the city's Armed Services Memorial Board meets at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 401 E. Virginia St.

The board hosts two ceremonies a year, one on Memorial Day and one on Veterans Day, both at Corporal RD Foster Veterans Memorial Park. Wednesday's agenda lists a discussion of responsibilities and supplies for the 2026 Veterans Day ceremony. A parks department summary attached to the item puts the estimated cost of a flyover at $4,000.

The agenda does not list the ceremony's date or time.

Flags around the park

A Rotary Club member is scheduled to present the club's veterans fundraiser. According to the parks department, flags bought through the fundraiser would be placed around the memorial park.

Board members will also discuss written operating procedures and guidelines for current and future members, focused on how the board plans its two ceremonies. A subcommittee has been working on them and planned to meet with the parks department's special events staff, according to minutes of the board's Sept. 9 meeting. Members will also elect officers on Wednesday.

All other items are discussion only, with no votes.

From the September meeting

The Sept. 9 minutes, up for approval Wednesday, show the board had already assigned ceremony tasks to members and staff. Parks Superintendent Marty Sillito told the board a volunteer group planned a cleanup at the park and that parks maintenance would fix ongoing problems with the fountain's nozzles.

The board also voted unanimously that night to add another name to the park's Veterans Memorial Wall, after a member presented documentation under the board's criteria. Board member Colin Kimball told the group that finding names to add to the wall should remain the board's most important mission, the minutes say.

The minutes are set to go to the City Council for approval on Nov. 3.
