Wyatt Johnston did his part in the shootout. Pittsburgh still found one more answer.

Johnston scored in the skills competition Saturday night as the Dallas Stars fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. Tyler Seguin had forced overtime with a tip-in at 19:30 of the third, and both Seguin and Johnston beat Arturs Silovs in the shootout before Rickard Rakell decided it for Pittsburgh, NHL.com reported.

Johnston finished regulation with one shot in 21:20, winning 6 of 9 faceoffs, per ESPN's box. He was one of Dallas' steadiest centers on a night when goals were scarce until the final minute.

From Dewar's opener to a late scramble

Connor Dewar opened the scoring at 1:57 of the third, ending Jake Oettinger's career-best 188:52 shutout streak. Seguin redirected Jason Robertson's shot with Miro Heiskanen also assisting to knot it 1-1. The Associated Press credited Seguin with forcing overtime with 29.1 seconds left.

In the shootout, Ben Kindel and Sidney Crosby scored for Pittsburgh around Seguin's conversion. Johnston answered to keep Dallas alive. Egor Chinakhov missed for Pittsburgh, then Rakell scored the winner after Mikko Rantanen missed the net for Dallas. Silovs had earlier stopped Robertson in the opening round.

Oettinger finished with 19 saves on 20 shots. Silovs stopped 24.

Road point, then Colorado at home

Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said Oettinger gave the Stars a chance after eight consecutive shutout periods to start that stretch and wanted more offense in front of him. Pittsburgh (3-2-1) snapped a three-game skid; Dallas fell to 2-2-1.

Johnston's shootout goal did not change the final, but it was the second Dallas conversion that forced Pittsburgh to keep shooting. The Stars host the Avalanche on Tuesday. Johnston's 21-plus minutes and shootout marker were the clearest stamps he put on a one-goal road night that ended one shot short.
