Arrive 90 minutes early and expect $15 a day to park, McKinney National Airport tells first passengers before Wednesday's launch

DTX's travel guidance for the Nov. 11 start of Avelo service covers the terminal address on FM 546, ticketless license-plate parking, REAL ID screening, a 40-minute bag cutoff and free parking for disabled veteran plates.

Five days before its first scheduled airline departure, McKinney National Airport has posted a checklist for travelers using the new passenger terminal, from when to show up to how the parking lot charges.

Avelo Airlines' launch flight leaves Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Fort Myers, Florida. Las Vegas and Orlando service follows Nov. 12, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa on Nov. 19, and Atlanta, Denver, Nashville, New Orleans, Sarasota/Bradenton and West Palm Beach in mid-December, according to the airport's list of routes.

Getting there and parking

The terminal's address is 1910 FM 546, and on airline sites, boarding passes and bag tags the airport appears under its code, DTX. The airport asks passengers to be there 90 minutes before departure, citing rush-hour traffic, drivers new to the airport roads and time to park. Avelo needs checked bags at the ticket counter at least 40 minutes before a flight leaves.

There is one lot, 980 spaces with electric-vehicle chargers, across from the terminal. It has no tickets: cameras read license plates on the way in and out, and drivers scan a QR code on the lot or terminal signs to register a plate and a payment card. Rates posted by the airport:

  • First 30 minutes: free
  • 30 minutes to 1 hour: $5
  • 1 to 2 hours: $10
  • 2 to 24 hours: $15

Spaces are first come, first served, and reservations are not offered. Vehicles with a qualifying Disabled Veteran or eligible military honor license plate park free, with eligibility set by Texas law, the airport says.

Security and inside the terminal

TSA screens passengers and bags, and every traveler must show a REAL ID-compliant license or ID or a passport, or use TSA's paid ConfirmID option. Inside the gate area, travelers will find a temporary snack kiosk and vending machines for now, with a full concession and bar still to come, along with free Wi-Fi, seat charging ports, a nursing room and a pet relief area.

Enterprise rents cars from a counter in the terminal, and Uber, Lyft and local ground transportation companies can pick up outside. Because flight times can shift, the airport asks passengers to check Avelo's app or website before leaving home.

"The McKinney National Airport team and partners are ready to deliver safe, secure, and on-time travel for our passengers," Airport Director Ken Carley said in the Nov. 4 release.
