Inflatable turkey map goes live, with a 25-foot bird set to land at Mitchell Park on Monday

Visit McKinney's 2026 map of yard and storefront turkeys opened Sunday on the city app. A giant turkey and sign go up at Mitchell Park on Nov. 2, and registered households can pick up a magnet starting Nov. 3.

McKinney's flock of inflatable turkeys is back on the map.

Visit McKinney launched its 2026 Inflatable Turkey Map on Sunday, Nov. 1, on the McKinney TX! app, where every registered bird gets a pin, a name and a backstory. The city's tourism office counted more than 400 inflatables on last year's map and has said it wants this year's to be larger.

Two additions are new this season.

A giant at Mitchell Park. Starting Monday, Nov. 2, a 25-foot inflatable turkey and a monument sign will stand at Mitchell Park as a photo stop for families working through the map.

A magnet for registering. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 3, anyone who has put a turkey on the map can collect an "Inflatable Turkey Club" magnet at the Visit McKinney office, 200 W. Virginia St. The turkey has to be inside McKinney city limits, and the office is limiting it to one magnet per family while supplies last. Because the visitor center is being renovated, the city says it may be closed on some days or the pickup spot may move, so residents should check the office's posted hours first.

How to join

Households add a bird through a form on the Visit McKinney website by giving its address, a name and a short story. People who registered last year can look up their address with the site's turkey lookup tool and either keep the old entry or update it. Registration stays open through the season, so the map fills in as more birds go up.

Visit McKinney asks people touring the displays to view them from the street or sidewalk and stay off residents' lawns. It also invites visitors to tag @visitmckinneytx on Facebook or Instagram for a chance to have their photos featured.

Where it started

The tradition began with a text. In September 2016, according to Visit McKinney, Helen Hutton of North Church Street asked six neighbors whether they would each buy an inflatable turkey and put it in the yard for Thanksgiving. All agreed, seven birds went up that year, and the neighbors posed with them the day after the holiday.

The practice spread through the Historic District and then across the city, which now bills itself as the Inflatable Turkey Capital of Texas.
