Study Shows Driverless Vehicles Could Reduce Traffic Delays in Dallas-Fort Worth

Research indicates that fully autonomous vehicles could decrease traffic congestion in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by up to 33 percent.

A recent study from Southern Methodist University suggests that the implementation of fully autonomous vehicles could lead to a significant reduction in traffic delays across the Dallas-Fort Worth region, potentially lowering congestion by as much as 33 percent without the need for new highway lanes.

This research is particularly relevant for McKinney, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Dallas, as it highlights the potential for improved traffic conditions in the area.

The study, led by Khaled Abdelghany at SMU's engineering institute, utilized traffic modeling from the Texas A&M Transportation Institute's forecasting program, with partial funding from the region's council of governments. Researchers conducted 25 experiments simulating traffic scenarios for the year 2045, evaluating levels of adoption at 100 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent compared to a baseline scenario with no autonomous vehicles.

In the scenario where all vehicles were autonomous, delays were reduced by up to 33 percent, and the time spent in congested traffic decreased by at least 19 percent.

The reduction in traffic delays is attributed to the smoother driving patterns of autonomous vehicles, which help eliminate phantom jams caused by human drivers who brake unevenly and maintain inconsistent gaps. "Autonomous vehicles may help mitigate these effects through smoother and more coordinated driving," Abdelghany stated.

In terms of freight transport, Texas is already at the forefront of autonomous vehicle testing, having established itself as a proving ground for driverless freight operations. Aurora Innovation initiated commercial driverless deliveries along the I-45 corridor between Dallas and Houston in late April 2025, marking the first such service in the United States. These trucks operate without human drivers, monitored remotely while transporting various goods.

The I-45 corridor was strategically selected, as nearly half of all truck freight in Texas travels between Houston and Dallas. Aurora has expanded its operations to include a second route from Fort Worth to El Paso and plans to deploy hundreds of trucks in the near future.

Other companies, including Kodiak Robotics, Waymo Via, Gatik, Plus, and Waabi, are also engaged in developing autonomous trucking within the state, solidifying Texas's position as a leader in this sector.

On the passenger side, Waymo has been operating a paid robotaxi service in Austin and began offering rides to select individuals in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio in February 2026, with plans for broader availability by the end of the year.

While the growth of autonomous vehicles raises questions about job displacement, experts indicate that the nature of work will evolve rather than disappear. Positions such as technicians for vehicle maintenance, remote fleet operators, and staff for freight handling will still be necessary.

Industry estimates suggest that autonomous vehicles could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and create about 9 million jobs globally by 2030.

However, the 33 percent reduction in traffic delays is based on an ideal scenario where all vehicles are autonomous, with the study's authors acknowledging that full adoption is not expected in the near term. Other research has indicated that a significant portion of autonomous vehicle operating hours may occur without passengers, potentially counteracting some of the anticipated congestion benefits.

Additionally, safety concerns regarding autonomous vehicles remain a topic of discussion.

Legislation has been enacted to regulate the operation of driverless vehicles in Texas, with Senate Bill 2807 establishing a framework for permits and emergency-response plans. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles is expected to begin accepting applications for commercial authorization in spring 2026.

As Texas continues to lead in the development of autonomous vehicle technology, the actual impact on traffic congestion and job creation will become clearer in the coming years, well before the projected timeline of 2045.
