RTX Corporation subsidiary Raytheon announced it is constructing a large space telescope for the Lazuli Space Observatory, a mission supported by Schmidt Sciences. The project aims to study exoplanets, distant galaxies, and other astronomical phenomena. The company stated that manufacturing is currently underway, with the instrument scheduled for delivery in 2028.
The telescope features a 3.1-meter primary mirror, which serves as its main light-collecting component. Raytheon described this as the largest unobstructed aperture ever launched on a commercial spacecraft platform. The design utilizes an off-axis configuration that places support structures outside the light path to minimize visual interference and improve image clarity.
To address challenges posed by extreme temperature fluctuations in orbit, the observatory employs lightweight materials intended to maintain thermal stability. This approach allows the instrument to begin collecting usable scientific data more rapidly after environmental changes in space. The system also incorporates sensors and software that automatically adjust optical alignment during operation, eliminating the need for manual corrections from ground-based engineers.
Raytheon noted that the technology was validated through digital twin simulations, which model system behavior prior to physical construction. The company has completed an initial design review for the project. Financial terms for the contract were not disclosed, and the company indicated the project is unlikely to materially impact RTX's near-term financial results.
The Lazuli Space Observatory is part of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Observatory System, an initiative backed by Schmidt Sciences. The organization was founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Wendy Schmidt. The observatory is expected to support research into cosmic events and the evolution of the universe. This contract highlights Raytheon's expansion into high-end space science beyond its traditional defense business.
