The U.S. Army is currently negotiating a contract with AeroVironment for its enduring high energy laser system, known as the E-HEL. This development was announced by Army acquisition executive Lozano during a Tuesday event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Lozano stated that the E-HEL program aims to provide protection for semi-fixed and maneuvering forces against Groups 1 through 3 drones, which are classified as small to medium-sized aerial threats. The system is designed to be mounted on various military vehicles, including Strykers, Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, and Infantry Squad Vehicles.
According to Lozano, the laser technology has demonstrated significant capability during recent demonstrations at the White Sands Missile Range. However, he did not disclose the specific name of AeroVironment’s system or other details regarding the potential contract terms.
The Army previously issued a request for information late last year, indicating a desire to acquire 20 E-HEL systems. The service expected to initiate an award in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026 or later.
AeroVironment had previously revealed its laser-powered LOCUST X3 platform as a solution for countering similar drone threats, though the company declined to comment on the current negotiations or confirm if the LOCUST X3 is the system under discussion.
In addition to the laser program, Lozano addressed the Army’s autonomous launcher initiative. While earlier reports suggested the service was seeking three or four vendors for this program, Lozano did not specify the number of awards he intended to make during his Tuesday remarks.
