Dominant Opening Drive Sets Tone
The Houston Cougars established an insurmountable lead early in their 77-6 victory over the Southern Jaguars on Saturday at TDECU Stadium. The decisive momentum shifted in the first quarter, where Houston outscored the visitors 28-0. Conner Weigman, who finished the game with 120 passing yards on 9 of 12 attempts and three touchdowns, orchestrated the opening surge.
He connected with Patrick Overmyer for a nine-yard touchdown pass, followed later in the quarter by an eight-yard strike to Amare Thomas. Houston also capitalized on the ground game, with Re'Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes both rushing for touchdowns. By the end of the first period, the Cougars had already built a 28-point cushion.
Sustained Offense in Second Half
The margin continued to expand in the second quarter, with Houston adding 21 more points to lead 49-0 at halftime. Keisean Henderson emerged as a playmaker, throwing a 43-yard touchdown pass to Koby Young and a 20-yard score to John Hebert. Koby Young, who finished with 54 receiving yards and two touchdowns on three catches, was a key target in the first half.
In the third quarter, Houston added another 21 points. Henderson contributed a 54-yard rushing touchdown, while DJ Butler and John Hebert added rushing scores. The Cougars led 70-6 entering the final period.
Southern Jaguars’ only points of the game came in the third quarter when Wyatt McCauley found Wydell Clark Jr. for a 79-yard touchdown pass, though the extra point was blocked by Christopher McKenna.
