The Tennessee Health Facilities Commission has granted approval for Ascension Saint Thomas to build Fairview’s first freestanding emergency department. The project represents a $20.6 million investment aimed at addressing the healthcare needs of a rapidly expanding local population.

Fairview’s population has increased by more than 36% since 2010, creating greater demand for medical services within the community. The new facility will be located near the intersection of Fairview Boulevard and Audubon Cove. It is designed to serve as part of a larger healthcare campus that also includes an outpatient center operated by Dickson Medical Associates.

The emergency department will occupy 11,345 square feet and feature ten treatment rooms, two triage rooms, and one trauma room. Services will include on-site imaging capabilities such as CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds, along with a full-service laboratory. The facility will be affiliated with Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West and will provide care consistent with hospital-based emergency rooms.

Dickson Medical Associates, which has provided services to Fairview and surrounding areas since 1940, will expand its presence at the new campus. The outpatient center will offer primary care, express care, behavioral health services, and various medical and surgical subspecialties. This expansion allows for coordinated care alongside the emergency department.

Ascension Saint Thomas President and CEO Fahad Tahir stated that the organization appreciates the support of local leaders and residents during the approval process. He noted that the partnership with Dickson Medical Associates aims to bring coordinated outpatient care closer to home for families in the area.

Dr. Daniel Sherwood, a family physician with Dickson Medical Associates-Fairview, expressed pride in continuing investments in the community. He indicated that the new campus will simplify access to both routine office visits and emergency treatment for patients.

Ascension Saint Thomas is a nonprofit health system with a 125-year history and is part of Ascension, one of the largest Catholic health systems in the United States. The system operates 18 hospitals and 320 sites of care across 45 counties in Tennessee. In fiscal year 2024, the organization provided $2.1 billion in care for individuals living in poverty and other community benefit programs.

Construction details and a specific timeline for the opening of the facility are not yet clear.
