Oakland Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko remains in stable condition after undergoing spinal surgery on Tuesday night. The procedure was necessary to address a fractured C6-C7 vertebra sustained during a Double-A game in Frisco, Texas, which is located approximately 12 miles west of McKinney.
The injury occurred during a play involving a flyball. Lasko, an outfielder for the Double-A Midland team, and teammate Devin Taylor both dove for the ball and collided. Lasko lay motionless on the field immediately after the incident.
Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed the spinal decompression and stabilization operation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. Medical updates from Dr. Poggi have been shared with the organization, prompting the team to direct its medical resources toward supporting Lasko’s recovery.
Athletics general manager David Forst issued a statement Wednesday expressing gratitude to the medical and training staff present at the game. Forst specifically thanked Midland athletic trainers Noah Huff and Audy Merrick for their on-field response, as well as the Frisco RoughRiders organization and local paramedics. He also noted that he has been in contact with Lasko’s mother, Patti, to convey the organization’s support.
Player development director Ed Sprague is traveling to Frisco to assist with the situation. Counseling services will be made available to players on the team following the incident.
