McKinney City Council is scheduled on Aug. 4 to take up a site plan for a proposed McKinney Islamic Association religious assembly facility on Virginia Parkway. The proposal is listed as a consent agenda item for properties at 5301, 5311 and 5321 Virginia Parkway.
The site covers about 5.5 acres near Virginia Parkway and Crutcher Crossing. Plans call for three buildings with a combined size of about 32,573 square feet, and the McKinney Islamic Association has described the project as an expansion beyond its current location.
A council work session is set for 3 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 6 p.m. at McKinney City Hall. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission considered the proposal on July 14 and voted unanimously to recommend approval before forwarding it to the council. Residents can attend or provide input through the city’s public participation process.
Some residents near the proposed site have objected on land-use grounds, including traffic from large events, parking spillover, noise and added vehicle activity near existing neighborhoods. The source did not provide additional details about any planned traffic or parking measures.
Some social media discussion has claimed a connection between the McKinney Islamic Association and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The Dallas Express reported that records it reviewed did not verify an affiliation between the association and CAIR or CAIR involvement in the Virginia Parkway proposal.
The report also noted that Gov. Greg Abbott’s office said a 2025 state designation involving CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood was tied to alleged national security concerns, while CAIR denied the accusations. CAIR has not been federally designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
