A 51-year-old man is facing two counts of manslaughter after a crash in McKinney killed a 77-year-old couple. James Armont was arrested for the incident, which police say involved street racing.
The collision occurred on July 17 at the intersection of Custer Road and Bedford Lane. Police stated that Armont was driving a red BMW when he crashed into a silver Hyundai minivan. The occupants of the minivan, William and Sandra Lazarus, both 77 years old, died in the crash.
McKinney police confirmed that Armont was taken to the hospital for injuries following the accident. Collin County jail records list him as being held, though no mugshot has been released. The Lazarus family declined to speak with reporters regarding the incident.
William and Sandra Lazarus were active members of the local community. According to the Allen Independent School District, the couple had worked at schools within the district. A growing memorial has been established in their honor.
Neighbors living near the intersection expressed shock and grief over the deaths. Romara Pimpleton, who was at home during the crash, described the sound as an intense boom. She stated that she knew immediately it would be a fatality upon seeing the heavily damaged vehicles outside.
