James Armont, 51, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter following a fatal vehicle collision in McKinney. The arrest stems from an incident on July 17 at the intersection of Custer Road and Bedford Lane, where police allege street racing contributed to the crash.
William Lazarus and Sandra Lazarus, both 77 years old, died in the accident. The couple were passengers in a silver Hyundai minivan that was struck by Armont’s red BMW. Police stated that Armont was driving at high speeds when he lost control and collided with the other vehicle.
The Lazaruses were active members of the Allen Independent School District community. Their involvement in local schools has been noted by district officials, who confirmed their employment history within the system. A memorial has begun to form in their honor as neighbors reflect on the loss.
Residents living near the intersection have long expressed concerns about traffic safety. Mariela Barnett, a neighbor of more than 20 years, said she frequently hears speeding and racing on that stretch of road. She believes installing a stoplight at Custer Road and Bedford Lane would help reduce dangerous driving behaviors.
Romara Pimpleton, who lives nearby, described the moment of the crash as sounding like an explosion. She and her daughter witnessed the aftermath, noting the severe damage to both vehicles. Pimpleton said seeing grocery bags in the back of the Lazaruses’ car highlighted the suddenness of their death during a routine trip.
