Back-to-School Reminders for Drivers

The City of McKinney has issued reminders for drivers to adhere to school zone speed limits, stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, avoid using cell phones while in school zones, and never pass a bus with flashing lights. Residents are also urged to look for children around schools and in neighborhoods.

Joint Safety Efforts

The City of McKinney works with McKinney ISD, Allen ISD, Frisco ISD, Melissa ISD, and Prosper ISD to address school safety issues. The city is responsible for establishing school zones and parking restricted areas in public right-of-way, designating crosswalks and paid crossing guard locations, installing and maintaining traffic controls such as signs and flashing lights, and designating safe walking routes to elementary schools.

The participating school districts hire and train crossing guards and provide on-site security and safety measures. The city and the school districts collaborate during the planning stages for new schools to address traffic circulation, pedestrian routes, and crosswalk locations.
